    Abstract:

    The folk drama “Tsar Maximilian” is a deeply original work of the folk theatrical culture that was immensely popular in the Russian Empire in the 19th – beginning of the 20th century. Having incorporated the traditions of the folk risorial entertaining culture and the early Russian professional theatre and reworked, in its own manner, some authors’ poetical writings this play became an integral part of peasants, workers and soldiers’ Christmastide entertainments. The scientific publication includes the most complete collection (36 variants) of the text of “Tsar Maximilian” that were written during its active staging in Russia, Ukraine and Belorussia. Six texts are published here for the first time. Reference material includes commentary and indexes. The publication in intended for folklorists, specialists in literature studies, theatre researchers, ethnographers, along with everyone who is interested in folk culture.

    Abstract:

    The book presents a new view on the mythological background underlying the creative codes and the artistic worldview of the authors of the unique Nenets literature in the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries. In building a mythopoetical world model in Nenets literature the explication of symbols expressing the people’s metaphysical view on existence and cognition is created. The book shows how the archetypes possessing the transcendental power of return and influence, as well as the myths and original concepts of the universe, space and time, logos, numbers, animals and the surrounding nature they had given rise to realize their meanings as the text elements (plots, images, mythologemas and binary oppositions). The monograph is aimed at the readers interested in the literature and culture of the nationalities of the North, philologists, students.
