Abstract:
The article discusses the genre typology of Sholokhov’s novel And Quiet Flows the Don. Sholokhov scholars define the structural morphology of the novel very differently, which, in our opinion, is largely due to the “epistemological uncertainty” existing in the field of genre theory. Finding the foundations in contemporary literary studies and, particularly, in contemporary literary theory, we have attempted to take a more responsible approach to the analysis of the novel’s typology. Giving arguments for our conception, we conclude that Sholokhov continues the tradition of Leo Tolstoy, shaping his literary material into the novelistic-epic compositional type.
