Abstract:

The work presents studies of the creative heritage of Russian writers and public figures of the 18th–19th centuries. The authors of the articles examine the final stage of Markell Radyshevsky’s work, the reader’s receptions of N.V. Gogol’s novel “Taras Bulba,” as well as the writer’s polemic with the religious-renovationist ideas of the German romantics. The collection includes academic publications of the correspondence between the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church of the synodal period, letters of the Sisters of Mercy Community of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross during the Crimean War, and the Moscow merchant Pyotr Porokhovshchikov’s autobiographical notes. The authors of the work are reflecting upon the role of the Monk Paisius Velichkovsky in preserving the Orthodox spiritual traditions, consider the images of Russian sovereigns in the works of Kokhanovskaya (N.S. Sokhanskaya), the concept of the theocentric work conceived by I.A. Goncharov in “Pallada Frigate,” roll calls in the fates of L.N. Tolstoy and Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin). Much attention is paid to the idea of St. Theophan on compiling the Gospel story and highlighting the principles of his work, analyzing the story of I.G. Shadrin “Bursa” as a fictionalized evidence of the life of the theological seminary, as well as a study of the relationship between visual and literary texts based on plots associated with the painting by A.P. Ryabushkin.
