Abstract:
Among the graphic artists who designed the lifetime editions of М.М. Prishvin, a special place belongs to У.A. Favorsky, one of the founders of Russian book graphics. Several documents indicate friendly and creative contacts between М.М. Prishvin and У.A. Favorsky. The article analyzes in detail the design of the book "Ginseng - the Root of Life" (1934), for which Favorsky not only created illustrations but also developed the layout of the publication. Favorsky illustrated other lifetime editions of Prishvin's works, such as "Kashchey's Chain" (1936), "Ginseng. Hunting Stories" (1937), "Berendeev Thicket" (1939). The article provides a comparative analysis of these illustrations and illustrations for works by L.N. Tolstoy ("Stories about Animals," 1932) and B.A. Pilnyak ("Stories," 1932), made by Favorsky in the same years. It allows us to demonstrate the artist's attention to the style of a literary work and to identify the features of Favorsky's plastic embodiment of Prishvin's artistic world. The article shows the subtle graphic interpretation of the writer's mythopoetics.
