The research was carried out at the A.M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the financial support of the Russian Science Foundation (project No. 22-18-00347 “Ivan Bunin’s Early Work: Poetry, Prose, Criticism, Journalism, Translations (1883–1902)”).

Abstract:

The article is devoted to the little-studied story of Ivan Bunin “Fedosevna”. The relevance of the work is due to the fact that until now the story has not become the subject of a special research, and the textual criticism of the story has not been studied. The article traces the history of the text of the work, published three times in the 1890s, but not included by Ivan Bunin in his collected works. The textual principles of presenting the work in the future scientific Collected works of Ivan Bunin are substantiated — the choice of the main text (publication of 1893), the early version of the story (publication of 1891) and non-inclusion in the future collected works of the publication of 1899. Variants of the story are analyzed. It is shown that from the first publication (1891) to the second (1893), the work undergoes significant changes that affected all levels of the text. Analysis of the edits demonstrates the writer’s work on his early works and the path of I.A. Bunin from the early “essay” versions of the text to the “classical” Bunin’s lyrical prose, with its psychology and artistry.
