Abstract:
In the collective monograph “Academic Commentary on the Literary Works of M.A. Sholokhov: Methodological Questions and Practice”, a pioneering task is undertaken in literary studies: the development of a system of scholarly principles for commenting on the writer's oeuvre, based on the examination of the entire array of circumstances in which Sholokhov's works were created — historical, historical-literary, biographical, and others. Special attention is paid to textological issues. Researchers have employed the results of commenting on the works of Russian classics, as well as the accumulated experience of the textological school of the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Despite the diversity of individual analytical approaches applied by the authors of the monograph to understand this complex and underexplored issue, a clear research concept is established, uniting diverse textual material into a coherent compendium of contemporary knowledge about the academic commentary on the literary works of M.A. Sholokhov. The monograph offers a practical example of commentary on the novel “The Soil Upturned” and a “Glossary of Local Words and Collocations in the Novel by M.A. Sholokhov ‘And Quiet Flows the Don’.” This collective monograph is targeted at philologists, educators, and teachers of literature, as well as students — all those interested in the literary works of M.A. Sholokhov, the commentary on his texts, and the history of Russian literature in the 20th century.
Keywords: Mikhail Sholokhov, academic commentary, literary texts, the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”, “The Soil Upturned.”
