Abstract:
The work uses articles from 1942–1943 published in the newspapers “Pravda”, “Izvestia” and “Krasnaya Zvezda”, covering the Battle of Stalingrad. The image of the warring Stalingrad is investigated, stable components forming the image of the city are established. It is noted that two symbols of Stalingrad’s resilience, Pavlov’s house and Mamaev Kurgan, especially the latter, are relatively rarely mentioned on the pages of the press. The image of the fortress house, a landmark for reflecting the stubborn defense of the city, is considered in detail. Recreating the appearance of houses, as well as the type of indigenous Stalingrad residents, correspondents often turn to the principle of antithesis, comparing pre-war and military realities. The importance of the motif of inheriting the victories at Tsaritsyn, whose successors are both the fighters and the entire fighting city, has been established. The productivity of comparing a city with a fortress was also noted: denying the similarity of Stalingrad with Verdun, journalists use this comparison as the basis for the metaphor of a fortress city. These features are stable, complement the information layer of correspondence and form the emotional and value component of the image of Stalingrad, which will be further developed in fiction.
