Abstract:
The trial of the major German war criminals, which took place in Nuremberg from November 1945 to October 1946, brought together journalists, writers, and filmmakers from all over the world. Among the writers representing the Soviet Union were Vs. Vishnevsky, I. Ehrenburg, K. Fedin, L. Leonov, B. Polevoy, S. Kirsanov and Vs. Ivanov. The publication presents the Nuremberg diary of Ivanov, a correspondent for the “Izvestia” newspaper, for the first time. It was kept from November 28 to December 20, 1945 and is now stored at the Manuscript Department of the IWL RAS. In addition to the diary, which tells the story of the city, its residents, meetings and conversations with fellow writers, the archival materials include Ivanov’s notes, which provide documents and records of the facts presented by the prosecution during the trial. They also include descriptions of the courtroom and verbal portraits of Nazi war criminals, as well as sketches for future essays. The materials are preceded by an introductory article that specifies the dates of the writer’s notes. These notes correlate in terms of content and style with other documentary and artistic works written during that period. Ivanov’s notes selected for publication are provided with historical and real-life commentary.
