Abstract:
The contribution of academician V.F. Miller to the study of Ossetian spiritual culture is difficult to overestimate. His detailed descriptions of Ossetian beliefs and his research largely predetermined the process of formation of Ossetian national identity. An important scientific achievement of Miller was the attribution of Ossetian to the Indo-European language family based on linguistic and cultural features. This conclusion remains relevant today and is actively used in modern research. V.F. Miller, studying Ossetian culture and its spiritual aspects, paid special attention to the beliefs of the Ossetians, represented in linguistic, folklore and ethnographic data. This synchronous cross-section, supported by the extensive knowledge of the scientist, played a decisive role in the formation of the Ossetian nation. Thanks to Miller’s meticulous argumentation, the Ossetian language and spiritual culture (mythology, beliefs, folklore) were attributed to the Indo-European branch of peoples.
