Abstract:
The book represents an annotated translation of Il Libro d’Oltramare (“The Book of Outremer”) — a report on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (1346–1350). It is the first pilgrim’s diary written in Italian, which is also the most detailed, systematic and multifaceted. The accompanying article inserts the work into the historical, cultural and literary context of the Middle Ages through its philological analysis. Particular attention is paid to the diary’s author and his influence on the transformation of the genre. The author of the article provides a comparison between Italian and Russian pilgrim’s diaries.
Keywords: Middle Ages, travelogue, pilgrim’s diary, Niccolò da Poggibonsi
