Abstract:

This is a study of the traditionalist canon in the literatures of the East. The book is a continuation of the work “The Poetics of the Medieval Literature of the East: Tradition and Creative Individuality”, prepared at IWL RAS and published in 1994. The problems which interested the researchers of medieval literature at that time continue to be relevant to this day. Modern studies consider the traditionalist canon of Eastern literatures a system that can evolve through the author’s creative initiative. In this context, the authors of the collective study analyze a vast material — from the literature of Ancient Greece and Byzantine Empire to the literature of the Near and Middle East, Mongolia and Japan. The articles presented by the group of authors demonstrate how unique literary works are born at the junction of the established canonical form and the creative individuality of the author. The study is addressed to orientalists, medieval literary scholars, as well as to a broader audience interested in the problems of literature and culture of the Middle Ages.

Keywords: Eastern literature, traditionalist canon, canonical form, author’s individuality.
