Abstract:
The study examines how some specific features of the literary life of the Silver Age were reflected in various forms of reception of the personality and later activity of L. Tolstoy. It analyzes the representation of Tolstoy’s image in the press. The paradox of the situation with Tolstoy is that he was perceived, on the one hand, as an undisputed living classic of literature yet on the other hand, Tolstoy was also a contemporary of the new era, he did not accept and condemned much of it. His attitude towards new commercial trends in journalism was generally negative, as was his opposition to socalled entertainment culture.
