Abstract:
M.A. Sholokhov was working on the third and the fourth books of the novel And Quietly Flows the Don — the ones dedicated to the events on Don during 1918−1920 — from the late 1920s to the late 1930s. The publication of the books was connected with a whole range of dramatic circumstances, which are the subject of the present article. The emphasis is placed on the textual evolution of the novel’s third and fourth books (which are the final ones and were repeatedly reproduced in various editions), as well as on the problem of their main textual source.
