Abstract:
With the development of urbanization and the need for personal development, young Kyrgyz people prefer to move from their ethnic settlements to live and work in large cities. In such a large social environment, the question arises of how to enable the next generation to pass on their native language and become experts in the national language. In this process, the language policy of the family is of decisive importance. On the example of a Kyrgyz family in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygru Autonomous Region of the PRC, this paper uses observational methods and semi-structured interviews, as well as B. Spolsky’s trichotomy theory of language policy, as a basis for analyzing differences in language consciousness, language practice and language management of family members in relation to national lingua franca, Kyrgyz and other languages, as well as for learning the language of the Kyrgyz family.
Keywords: Kyrgyz language, national language, new urban migrants, family language policy.
