Abstract:

The article presents and analyzes the first responses to the publication of the chapters from Mikhail Sholokhov’s novel “They Fought for Their Motherland”, which were written by ordinary soldiers and officers of the Red Army who fought on the front lines, as well as by professional critics. All of them praised the novel for its “high artistic merit, truthfulness, and journalistic acuity”. N.S. Tikhonov, P.P. Gromov, L.I. Levin, and I.G. Lezhnev were the first to respond to the publication of the chapters from “They Fought for Their Motherland”, initiating a discussion about Sholokhov’s war prose that continued later.
