Abstract:

Essays and articles by M.A. Sholokhov from the 1940s deserve close attention. This is explained by their high professional and artistic level, the important and sometimes key place they occupy in the journalism and literature of the era, their connection with the style of the great writer as a whole. For a philological analysis of M.A. Sholokhov’s journalism of the Great Patriotic War period, it is important to find a text that is as adequate to the concept as possible. The article “Such Victory as History Has Never Seen”, published in “Pravda” newspaper a few days after the Great Victory of the USSR, was abridged in the authoritative Collected Works of the writer in 1985–1986 and 2001–2002, and in the first, especially given its small volume, it was abridged quite significantly. An entire paragraph has disappeared, where the “commander’s genius of Comrade Stalin” was mentioned, the leader’s name has been removed from the finale, which directly violates the author’s intent, the compositional harmony of the work, and the intonation of the speech. For the story “The Science of Hatred” it is absolutely necessary to take into account the author’s will in the first newspaper and separate brochure publications of the work in 1942, which include an epigraph taken from the order of I.V. Stalin dated May 1, 1942. The language of the writer’s war essays deserves special attention. Aimed at the widest possible readership, it also contains very interesting verbal images, which through a series of associative connections form a unique style and rich content of the work, as can be seen already in the first war essay “On the Don”.
