Abstract:

The article presents a comparative analysis of the works of Andrey Platonov and Asar Eppel, a professional translator, poet and writer, who wrote the collections of short stories “Grassy Street” and “The Champignon of My Life.” The features of the chronotope, the principles of depicting the individual and society in its moral, socio-psychological and ideological manifestations, and the uniqueness of the writers’ styles are determined. An analysis of the chronotope in the works of these both allows us to identify such common features as topographic accuracy, localization, and the entropic isolation of the “suburban” reality, immersion in which becomes for the writers a way to comprehend life. The ideological and artistic center of the writers’ works is the inner world of the characters, who are somehow opposed to the “suburban,” which determines the problematic and thematic complex of the works: the basis of the plot is the desire of the characters to find home and family, and the main conflict is the opportunity to remain human, to be inspired and to spiritualize the world. The linguistic originality of Eppel’s prose also testifies to his deep aesthetic and ideological closeness to Platonov. The writers’ manner characterized by an ontologically loaded phrase, recording everyday life and being, and word usage is a way of philosophizing, since their philosophical ideas about the world are realized in it.
