Abstract:

In A. Platonov’s works of the 1930s (“Hurdy-gurdy,” “The Technical Novel,” “Jan,” “Happy Moscow”), there is a recurring plot situation of a festive feast. The sequence of events, the motivational organization and the type of conflict that characterize this plot situation suggest that it is a reference to the literary tradition of depicting feasts and balls. Literary models of feasts and balls, which are formed in the space of the “ballroom” text of Russian literature of the first half of the 19th century and texts that depict feasts, create the basis for building the chronotope of the plot situation of a feast. The reproduction of a ready-made literary model is accompanied by its inevitable semantic transformation and “adaptation” to the historical and everyday realities of the 1930s. At the same time, the structure of the model is preserved, including its spatial and temporal properties, which serve as a means of organizing the narrative and metanarrative in the feast episode. The description of the chronotopic model of the feast is carried out by establishing its connections with the event sequence of the episode. The functional boundaries of the chronotopes of the feast and the ball are determined in the plot and narrative development of a particular work. In addition, the description of the chronotope is accompanied by the identification of the semantic subtext created by it.

  • Keywords: A. Platonov, plot situation, chronotope of a feast, chronotope of a ball, metanarrative.
