Abstract:
The article examines the issue of antinomies in the works of M.M. Bakhtin and Vyach. Ivanov in Gogotishvili’s interpretation. Based on published and archival materials, it reconstructs the trajectory of her thought from Bakhtinian philosophy of language to Ivanov’s predicative conception of symbol and myth, and back to Bakhtinian double-voicedness and polyphony. It demonstrates that for Gogotishvili, an antinomy is not a dead end, but a constructive principle of indirect meaning-making and a productive method of describing language. The article includes a fragment of an unfinished and unpublished article “Antinomia and Antitonia”, along with an archival poetic parody that reflects the limits of the reception of her complex metalanguage in the academic community.
