Abstract:

The work is devoted to the study of the writer’s metaphysical views, which are reflected in the “Code of Thoughts of Leo Tolstoy”. The author deals with issues related to the history of the creation of the Code — a unique source, which was worked on by the Tolstovians V.G. Chertkov, F.A. Strakhov and others from the late 1880s to the early 1920s. It was supposed to reflect all aspects of Tolstoy’s worldview, including the main provisions of Tolstoy’s metaphysical concept: ideas about the divine principle, the soul, spiritual life, mind and consciousness, and the peculiarities of Tolstoy’s perception of the categories of material world. The author reconstructs Tolstoy’s metaphysics as it is presented in the Code, draws attention to the peculiarities of the compilers’ perception of certain issues of Tolstoy’s philosophy, and compares them with the interpretations of these issues available in the research literature. The article substantiates the relevance of studying and introducing into scientific circulation a source that gives a complete picture of Tolstoy’s personality, work and worldview.

  • Keywords: Tolstoy’s philosophy, metaphysics, Tolstovians, V.G. Chertkov, F. A. Strakhov, “Code of Thoughts of Leo Tolstoy”.
