Abstract:

The article presents a comparative textual analysis of three typescripts of the story “The Heart of a Dog.” The analysis shows that after the death of the author, the widow of the writer E.S. Bulgakova made 40 corrections in the text of the first typescript of the work with a black ballpoint pen. 5 of corrections were stylistic and semantic. This correction by E.S. Bulgakova was taken into account in the fi rst foreign publications of “The Heart of a Dog” in 1968 in the magazines “Student” and “Grani,” and then in the fi rst Soviet publication in the magazine “Znamya” (Moscow, 1987). The defective text of the story continues to be reprinted to this day, it has been translated into foreign languages.

  • Keywords: Bulgakov, “The Heart of a Dog,” textual studies, editorial corrections.
