Abstract:

The article examines G. Steiner’s essay Tolstoy or Dostoevsky. Оpposition and its connection with the previous Russian and European tradition of Dostoevsky reception. The author of the article emphasizes the special “old” critical style of G. Steiner, expressed, for example, in the absence of footnotes. It turns out that Steiner not only explores the style and philosophy of the underground man, but also imitates them, thereby becoming not only a text about the reception of Dostoevsky (whom Steiner considers responsible for the modern literary situation), but also the object of this reception.

  • Keywords: F. Dostoevsky, Notes from Underground, reception, George Steiner.
