The article is devoted to the understanding of the Russian revolution in the works of Maxim Gorky and Leo Tolstoy. Much attention is paid to the views of Tolstoy on the first Russian revolution of 1905, which found expression both in the journalism of those years and in the works of art. Revealed the controversy of L. Tolstoy in the story Who is the
killers? Pavel Kudryash with M. Gorky’s novel Mother. It is part of the ideological dispute between the two writers.
