Abstract:

The works of M. Gorky were in demand by European cinema. Directors of various stylistic cinematographic directions turned to the screen version of his works. French cinema has repeatedly turned to the work of M. Gorky. In 1926 he released the film “The Madness of the Brave” (“La folie des vaillants”), filmed by Germain Dulac, who became one of the founders of surrealism in the cinema. In 1936 a film “The lower depths” (“Les basfonds”) based on the play by M. Gorky was directed by Jean Renoir. The script for the film was written by E.I. Zamyatin, and Gorky supported him in this work.

Keywords: M. Gorky, cinematography, “The lower depths”, J. Dulac, J. Renoir, S. Pallosch.
