Abstract:

Allegory, originally the organizing principle of M. Gorky’s poetics, determines to a great extent the uniqueness of Gorky’s “romantic realism”. The article shows how the writer’s allegorical range expands over the years. Numerous examples of negative allegory (the estrangement device) in his prose are analyzed.

Keywords: allegory, negative allegory, the estrangement device, M. Gorky, V. Shklovsky, D. Chizhevsky.
