Abstract:
The article analyzes the background, content and structure of Gorky’s latest publishing project “The History of the Village.” The analysis of Gorky’s articles devoted to the “History of the Village,” as well as archival documents, newspaper publications and memoirs of contemporaries allow to reconstruct his plan. The article also reveals the role of the scientist M.I. Bursky and the writer V.Ya. Zazubrin in the work on the project. Special attention is paid to those parts of the project that were most intensively worked on. Summing up the results, it can be concluded that Gorky attached the special importance to the publishing project “The History of the Village” and within its framework to the book series “Kolkhoznik’s Library,” which is confirmed by the writer’s intention to create a new book of works of fiction specifically for this series. The article summarises the results of the work by the time of Gorky’s death and demonstrates the further fate of the project.
