Abstract:
Jane Austen’s works are immensely popular all around the world and become a basis for numerous adaptations, imitations, parodies and pastiches. This phenomenon transcends borders of English-speaking countries, as young adult fantasy novels by a German writer Mechtild Gläser can provide an example. In the novel Emma, der Faun und das vergessene Buch characters’ name mimic those form the books of Austen, and the development of plot lines also contains a lot of allusions to Pride and Prejudice and Emma. Mechtild Gläser uses allusions to Austen’s works to attract attention of readers, to define her own characters, to play with reader’s expectation. Her novel shows, on the one hand, the degree in which Austen’s works are relevant for the modern world, but, on the other, their simplification and superficial understanding in mass culture.
