Abstract:

Cultural memory is maintained by historiographical discourse, which presents a retrospective of the past, combining the objective information about real life experience and the author’s artistic intent. The study is based on the notes „Abseits“ (2005) by Gunther de Bruyne. The chosen work is an example of his- toriographical prose. The subject of the study is linguistic objectification of the Brandenburg landscape in the text of the notes, as well as the range of means used to objectificate the landscape depending on the angle of consideration and the subject of the perspective. The study reveals a discrepancy between the stereotypical image of the land of Brandenburg as a meager, dreary area, the perception that emerged in the Middle Ages, and the author’s idea of the local landscape. Besides, a tendency to vary the means of objectification has become clear. The analysis shows that the choice depends on whether the author considers himself a subject of the perspective. In the contexts where the subject of perception is introduced by the author, general nominations are common and stereotypes are objectified. In the contexts where the author is seen as the subject of the perspective, the objectification of the landscape reveals greater variations in lexical, grammatical and stylistic means.
