Abstract:
The article is devoted to memories of Russia in the novel „Tumult“ (2014) by a German poet, writer and translator H. M. Enzensberger, whо presents cultural life in Russia in the 1960s. In his novel, the author describes the events which he took part in: the International Writers’ Forum in Leningrad, the Peace Congress in Azerbaijan, the meeting of writers with N. S. Khrushchev, trips to M. Aliger’s dacha in Peredelkino, communication with E. Yevtushenko, L. Ginzburg and other writers, poets and translators. The study established that Enzensberger, who wrote a dissertation on the poetry of the German romanticist C. Brentano, relies on the traditions of the romantic novel, which was an example of universal poetry, including philosophy and rhetoric, poetry and prose, the sublime and the low. Similarly, Enzensberger’s novel, conceived as a documentary novel about events in Germany in the 1960s, includes philosophical reflections on time, reports of political events, diary entries and lyrical texts that allow us to expand the horizons of the epic narrative. One of the objectives of the article, therefore, was to determine the role of lyrical texts in Enzensberger’s collage novel. Using comparative historical, biographical and linguistic stylistic methods, the article analyzes Enzensberger’s poems of the 1960s, which introduce a subjective and lyrical note into the historical events of the turning point of the 1960s described in the novel.
