Abstract:

The article is devoted to the close connection of Leon Bakst's painting “Terror Antiguus” with “The Last Day of Pompeii” by Karl Bryullov. Both paintings combine the historical genre with the genre of catastrophes, which gives reason to talk about the concepts of historical painting and history as such in the 19th — early 20th centuries. The focus is on the construction by the efforts of archaeologists, writers and painters of the modern image of ancient culture — the “myth of antiquity” and the “myth of art” important for symbolism, interest in specific historical monuments and their interpretations in the life-building search for symbolism as well.

  • Keywords: Bakst, Bryullov, “Terror antiquus”, history painting, archaic period, korai.
