Abstract:

The article presents for the first time in printed form an audio story by Georgy Sviridov, which characterizes (as a rhapsody, close in spirit and style to the works of ancient poets-rhapsodes) the genre of his “Poem to the Memory of Sergey Esenin”, reveals the content of the work and the underlying motives for its creation. Specific examples from Esenin’s poems (“I’m the Last Poet of the Village”, “Jordanian Dove”, “Pantocrator”, “Autumn”, “Where Are You, Father’s House”, “Our Faith Hasn’t Faded”, “Green Hair, Girlish Breast”, “Lord Went to Test People in Love”, “Silver Road”, “Octoechos”, “Requiem”, “Wind Whistles Under the Steep Fence”), selected by the composer for musical embodiment, demonstrate the details of Sviridov’s work with the poet’s texts — from changing one or several letters in a particular word to changing the composition of the poem as a whole.

  • Keywords: G.V. Sviridov, S. Esenin, transcript of audio recording, “Poem to the Memory of Sergey Esenin” (genre, content, motives for creation).
