Abstract:

The article examines the problem of the reception of M.A. Sholokhov’s military prose in China during the War of Resistance of the Chinese people to the Japanese invaders (1931–1945). The war with Japan required maximum mobilization of the Chinese literary community and stimulated a surge of Chinese public interest in the work of Sholokhov. At the very beginning of the war, Sholokhov was already well known to Chinese readers and literary critics, his novels “And Quiet Flows the Don” and “The New Land” were translated and researched by Chinese scholars of literature and critics immediately after their release. From 1941 to 1945, Sholokhov’s journalism and prose of the war years were introduced into Chinese artistic and social life, and enjoyed special attention in fighting China. Causing wide resonance among Chinese readers and critics, Sholokhov’s creative activity simultaneously served as an educator and inspirer of the Chinese literary community.
