Abstract:

The collective work we present to the reader is dedicated to one of the most famous Russian novels, read throughout the world and included in school curricula both in Russia and in many other countries: Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. This volume represents the fourth book in the research project Dostoevsky’s Works: Current State of Research, which brings together scholars from around the globe. The project’s first volume was dedicated to the novel The Idiot (Moscow, Nasledie Publ., 2001), the second to the novel The Brothers Karamazov (Moscow, Nauka Publ., 2007), and the third to the novel The Adolescent (Moscow, IWL RAS Publ., 2022). This book analyses Dostoevsky’s methods of creating profound, transformative texts, the presence and the function of Biblical quotes and liturgical references in the novel, books read or written by characters and their role and function in Dostoevsky’s text, the writer’s theological vision and the novel’s reception among Catholic theologians, psychology and physiology as projections of onthology, characters’ dreams, key concepts, the system of names and symbols, details-things, the historical background and cultural context of the work, the images of Napoleon and Newton in both the novel and 19th-century thought, the system of the characters (particularly the circle of protagonists), the poetics of gaze, gesture, and movement, the novel’s artistic reception in the 20th and 21st centuries (screen adaptations, theatrical productions, illustrations, fanfiction), methodologies for researching and teaching the novel, what a writer’s museum could be, and a lot more. The book is meant for devoted readers of Dostoevsky and those seeking deeper understanding of his works, as well as philologists, philosophers, and theologians. A resource for school and university teachers.
