Abstract:
The author examines the influence of Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground and the image of the Underground Man in the oeuvre of the contemporary American writer Bret Easton Ellis. The most detailed study of the reception of the “underground man” in the novel American Psycho was published in 1991. The author examines the implementation of the typological features of the Underground Man and their transformation in the main character of the novel — the maniac-murderer Patrick Bateman. It is concluded that F.M. Dostoevsky and the type of Underground man are extremely important in the oeuvre of B.E. Ellis, whose artistic worlds are similar to the characters inhabiting them — “underground” people living in a world of consumption without meaning and purpose.
