Abstract:
The article explores the question of the soul of M. Gorky, which for a long time was regarded as a problem about the two souls of the writer. The concept of “two souls”, modern variants of the formulation of this problem and their criticism are investigated. The concept of “two souls” of M. Gorky has been used so far in a fruitful and attractive way to clarify the creative secrets of the writer. But as every writer has one soul, probably Gorky also has one single soul. Although it is difficult to draw a true spiritual image of Gorky, it is not worth defending the scheme of contradiction, i.e. the thesis of two or three souls, but it is necessary to try to explore the true spiritual face of Gorky through the concepts of disagreement and contradictions. This is an actual scientific task in modern studies about M. Gorky and his works.
Keywords: Gorky, two souls, “Karamora”, The Life of Klim Samgin.
