Abstract:

M.N. Muravyov, one of the most educated noblemen in Russia in the second half of the 18th and early 19th centuries, tutor to Grand Dukes Alexander and Konstantin, pursued his interests in marginalia of the books that were a part of his extensive library. One of the most important artefacts of this kind is the Basel complete edition of Virgil of 1547. This article is a summary of marginalia in Virgil’s “Bucolics”, with entries in other places relating to pastoral poetry. Some entries represent experiments in verse translation of Virgil; others reflect his focus on parallel segments in New European poetry — he gives a special role to Torquato Tasso with his Aminta, the German bucolic poets (Christian Ewald von Kleist) and even the Neolatines; his emphasis on the French in this area is significantly less. One of the inscriptions represents M.N. Muravyov’s reflection on the commentatorial approach to antique texts, which to a certain extent is carried out by his own writings.

Кeywords: M.N. Muravyov, Virgil, marginalia, eclogue, pastoral poetry.
