Abstract:

The article presents an analytical review of the genealogy of Bishop Andrey (Ukhtomsky), who headed the Sukhumi diocese in the difficult pre-war and pre-revolutionary period, when Abkhazia was in dire need of missionary work, strengthening of the Orthodox faith, and education, when many issues of the life of the diocese had to be resolved wisely, carefully, taking into account the future development of Abkhazia as an independent prosperous region. The personal qualities of the ruling bishop, his extraordinary and active nature, excellent education, organizational skills were rooted in his family origins. The ancient family of princes Ukhtomsky traced its history back to Rurik, and in the female line to Genghis Khan. Not only the noble, but also the very numerous family of the princes Ukhtomsky gave Russia outstanding military men — officers and admirals, a famous architect, diplomat and publicist, and, finally, the younger brother of the bishop became an academician, an outstanding physiologist, the creator of the doctrine of the dominant. Rare memories of Bishop Andrei about his parents and nanny, recorded by relatives from his words, are presented.

  • Keywords: Russian Orthodox Church, Sukhumi diocese, Bishop Andrei (Ukhtomsky), biography, memoirs.
