Abstract:
The paper considers the “novel stories” by I. Bunin, created in the 1910s: “Merry Yard”, “Cup of Life”, “Good Life”, “Compatriot”. The stories are analyzed in the aspect of novel thinking, a relevant problem for now. The author notes the features of the stories that form the novel discourse. In “Merry Yard”, the description of the events is given in a chronical way, like in a novel; also, the contrast as a literary device is ramped up. In “Cup of Life”, the retrospection becomes a leading novel device, giving symbolical aspect to the details. The “Good Life” story has a certain narrative form, that helps the author to create not only the heroine image, but also an image of a whole provincial town. The “Compatriot” story is written in the tradition of adventure novel. The large-scale setting of events, an extensive system of narrative forms, the novel type of hero, orientation to a certain novel tradition (chronicle, adventure, hagiographic), the principle of retrospection and contrast, the importance of detail are all features of the novel-type stories of Bunin.
