Abstract:
The 1947 stage of the “Slums” by Gorki at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan played an important role for the destiny of the theatre. The play has had a great value because it marked the birth of 1st Italian public theatre. These were difficult times after the 2nd World War and fascism. It’s significant that the founders of the theatre chose as the first drama work “The Slums” because it had to represent the core of all future drama activity of the theatre. The research materials are the documents found in the archive of the Piccolo Teatro in Milan: critical reviews, opinions, essays, photos of the 1947 staging “Slums”, and opinions on the staging of director Giorgio Strehler. From critical reviews and the reaction of the public we can perceive Gorki novelty and the need of his drama for our contemporary word.
