Abstract:

The article is devoted to the historical and literary monuments of medieval Mongolian literature called “The Secret History of the Mongols”. The palm of the introduction of this work into the scientific circulation belongs to Russian Oriental Studies. The finding of his short text in transcription by Chinese characters in the Beijing Imperial Library by Palladium Kafarov, translation, commenting, compiling a dictionary and publishing this text by him in the Works of Members of the Russian Spiritual Mission in Beijing was an event that marked the beginning of his study. In the first half of the 20th century the first scientific work of S.A. Kozin, dedicated to the study of “The Secret History of the Mongols”, which was highly praised in world Mongol studies. The output of this work, including reconstruction, restoration of the original prose-poetic text and its presentation in the Mongolian language, as well as in translation into Russian, interpretation by the author, his description, his research approach, the principles of translation undertaken by him, raised to a new higher level study of medieval texts. This work of Kozin was an impulse for further study of the “Secret History of the Mongols” in Eurasian space. The analysis of the monument undertaken in this article by the example of S.A. Kozina allowed us to consider some urgent problems, in particular, the problems of translating ancient texts, their interpretation, commenting and perception in Russian Mongolian studies.

  • Keywords: medieval Mongolian literature, Russian Mongolian studies, “The Secret History of the Mongols”, text, translation, reception.
