Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to introduce into scientific circulation little-known reviews of the German press and censura, as well as the opinions of members of the public and literary circles on the release of the first edition of M. Gorky’s story “Mother” in Germany. This state became the second after the USA, where the work was published. Unlike the English translation of the book, the German version was immediately published as a separate edition. The first responses appeared in a number of leading publications a few months later. It is worth noting that it was in Germany that “Mother” fell under the control of foreign censorship, which saw in the book a call for anarchy and the overthrow of the autocracy, followed by a ban on the story for publication and its author is subject to prosecution. Following the report of the German censor, the Russian censorship issued a similar resolution.
