Abstract:

The article presents M. Gorky’s path to the creation of his own publishing house. The publishing house, called “Parus,” was organized by the writer in 1915. A.N. Tikhonov and I.P. Ladyzhnikov helped him in this. Later Z.I. Grzhebin joined the work of the publishing house. In the published literature, even fiction, preference was given to anti-war works — for example, such as the poem by V.V. Mayakovsky “War and Peace” and the novel by G.J. Wells “Mr. Britling and the War.”Of the journalistic publications, it should be noted the series received in Gorky’s correspondence the title “Europe before and during the war.” It includes books published in 1918, namely L. Vladimirova “War and the Balkans,” M.N. Pokrovsky (with the participation of A. Lozovsky) “France before and during the war,” I.M. Kheraskovo “England before and during the war.” In addition to books, “Parus” published the magazine “Letopis’” and the newspaper “Novaia Zhizn’.” From the pages of these periodicals, M. Gorky and his like-minded people called for Russia’s speedy exit from the international carnage that was murderous for it, which eventually led to revolutionary upheavals and civil war. The research was carried out in the framework of the historical-comparative method. The result of the research is the first detailed description of one of the important moments in M. Gorky’s life — the creation by the writer of the publishing house “Parus” and its management.
