Information about the author:

Evgenii N. Nikitin (1950–2023), PhD in Philology, Senior Researcher, А.M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Povarskaya 25 а, 121069 Moscow, Russia.

Abstract:

The article examines the history of the creation by M. Gorky and Z.I. Grzhebin in 1919 of the private “Z.I. Grzhebin Publishing House” and tells about the work of this publishing house before its closure in 1924. Gorky played an important role in it as an editor-in-chief. The documents identified by us in the archives and given in the article (contracts concluded with the State Publishing House, reports of Z.I. Grzhebin Publishing House, letters of Z.G. Grinberg, Z.I. Grzhebin, M. Gorky) helps to assess the contribution that the publishing house has made to the national culture. The research was carried out in the framework of historical-comparative, descriptive, and source-based methods. Despite the very difficult political and economic circumstances under which Z.I. Grzhebin Publishing House had to exist, it managed to release about 200 books of various contents in 5 years of work. Some of them, such as “Images of Italy” by P.P. Muratov, are still being republished. The publishing house has made a significant contribution to the cultural development of Russia through its activities.
