Abstract:

This chapter is dedicated to reflections on the feasibility and appropriateness of creating a linguistic commentary for set phrases found in the literary works of M.A. Sholokhov. It argues that a commentary on individual proverbs and sayings is most rational. This facilitates the identification of the sense­making function of set phrases within the structure of the text. It is most convenient to conduct such a commentary in preparation for a digital version of a scholarly edition, where one can transition from explanation to interpretation.
