Abstract:
The book is based on the materials of the International scientific conference “Femininity and Masculinity in the Modernist Culture: Russia and Abroad” (Moscow, IWL RAS, February 14–16, 2023). The authors of the articles examine how in the literature and, more broadly, in the art of modernity the urgent social and psychological changes associated with the ongoing gender change, the expansion of the boundaries of “normative” ideas about femininity, the discovery by women of their own bodies, as well as the limitations of the “standard” male behavior by men, were realized and modeled. The study considers gender problematics in the comparative aspect, female images and their typology in a number of Russian and Western European writers of the era, the representation of the feminine and the masculine in literary criticism and the press, the “women’s question” as a political, social and philosophical problem, the evolution of male images and ideas about masculinity in general. The book is addressed to the literary and cultural scholars, as well as anyone interested in the history of culture, “women’s” and “gender” history.
Keywords: femininity, masculinity, gender, modernity, comparative studies, identity.
